Balance and the Butterfly Effect

This testimonial tugged at my heart along with the others that also mentioned how their immediate family was benefitting from them being more balanced. I was filled with joy. It made me realise something - that this "being balanced" isn't just for the mothers, it is for their loved ones as well.


There is a butterfly effect.

Being balanced doesn't just affect you it affects those around you.

We know this intuitively. When we stop and examine why our child is acting out and can’t be calmed down, we often realise that we were having a “bad day” first. Once we calm down, we find it easier to calm our children down. Our ability to BE balanced affects those around us.

Our kids know this too.

All our kids want for us as working parents according to the report is to be less tired and less stressed. ie. more in balance. That is because kids know, subconsciously, that if we are balanced - they are balanced. Happy mum - happy home.

In terms of specifics, here are three ways in which you being balanced improves the quality of life for those around you:

  1. Anxiety genes (and other ‘negative’ genes) are less likely to be turned on or “expressed” in your children. Epigenetic research by McGill University presented to UNICEF shows that “the activity of genes implicated in brain development and function are directly regulated by the social environment”. This means that if the home life is stressful i.e. unbalanced, then genes can be affected. You can alter your children at a genetic level.

  2. Being balanced in your mind means that you are able to respond constructively rather than react defensively which leads to better relationships and improved communication.

  3. There will be less “emotional wake” which lowers the cortisol levels in those around you as their mirror neutrons are not trying to decipher the true meaning of your actions. Your actions will reflect your intentions in a balanced way which will promote feelings of safety and thus less stress.

This is sometimes easier said than done especially with deadlines, pressures and expectations we place on ourselves and others. I get it.

The question to ask yourself is ...

"What are you teaching your children by the way in which you live your life?"

For the way we respond to these situations - balanced or otherwise, is a choice and one of which we need to become more aware because we are role modelling how our children should be living their lives with every choice we make.
